The real reason behind understanding the motion blur is to know how to avoid it because sometimes it is not what you want.

Freezing the motion

You know from our previous discussion that longer shutter speed causes Blur in images of moving objects, so, in order to freeze the motion we can use shorter shutter speed for moving objects.

How to determine the correct shutter speed to freeze motion?

What shutter speed we need depends on three factors:

The speed of movement

Let’s understand this with a simple example. Imagine two scenarios, we have people walking on a road and a fast-moving car. Imagine you press the shutter and the chosen shutter speed is too long. While the shutter is open the people on the road will move a certain distance and create some blur but because the car is moving 10x faster it will move 10x further and create even more blur. Now if we set the shutter speed just enough to freeze the motion of people on the road, but the car will still be blurred because it is much faster. So, to freeze the motion of the car, we need even faster shutter speed.
